- Think about what kind of spirituality is built on being ‘Poor in Spirit’. How similar or different is this from your own spiritual life?
- ‘Poor in Spirit’ is a posture of the heart. Identify the things in your life that resist this posture, and deal with them ruthlessly.
- Cultivate a lifestyle of longing: have an appetite for hunger, be desperate for desperation, be comfortable with discomfort.
Matthew 5:3 (NIV)
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Gerard Kelly: There is a bias to the poor because only in this can the Gospel announcement truly be for all. The principle is simple: the poor have no means of their own to become rich, nor the powerless to gain power. But the rich and powerful have within themselves the possibility of becoming poor. Salvation offered only to winners will by definition exclude many. Only salvation offered to losers – whether by circumstance or choice – can be described as comprehensive.
Philippians 3:7 (NASB)
But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
Gerard Kelly: Loss opens doors to the Spirit that gain and comfort have locked tight.
Heidi Baker: You have to stay hungry and thirsty for the things of God… Are you needy? Are you thirsty? Are you hungry? Are you desperate for Jesus? Are you someone who feels as if you may just die unless God shows up? Or do you have a mind-set like many in the Western world – having a middle-class kind of heart? Are you someone who thinks, ‘Yeah, whatever. God will either do it or He won’t, so it doesn’t matter’?
Heidi Baker: Poor in spirit is a posturing of the heart rather than an economic position. From Harvard to Mozambique, God visits those who want Him… I believe Jesus meant that poor in spirit is a posturing of the heart where one is wholly given, fully yielded, completely desperate, and totally dependent on God alone. The Lord wants to cause even the rich and the middle class to be poor in spirit and know that they are in total need of him… I believe being poor in spirit is a choice, a decision, we all have to make to go lower still, fully dependent on the One who is always dependable.
